I was truly blessed to have had a wonderful and wise mother. As Mother’s Day approaches it made me think about how many of her sayings apply to the business world. Here are just a few of her favorite sayings, some of her best advice. I’ll leave it to you to consider how they apply to the work world:
  • Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday
  • The more dirt you throw on someone the more ground you lose
  • If you can’t say something nice about someone – don’t say anything at all
  • Aint is not a word
  • “I can’t” is not an excuse
  • People who swear don’t have a large enough vocabulary
  • Be careful who you hang out with
  • Be on time
  • I can’t help it if I love you more than the all of your friend’s mothers (used when I was asking to do something just because my friends were doing it)
  • Look both ways before you cross the street
  • Don’t tease your brother
  • Be nice to everyone – you never know what they have going on that you don’t know about
  • The mills of the Gods grind slowly but they grind exceedingly fine (meaning – you can’t push someone on their sword, they will fall on it themselves without your help)
  • “Please” is a magic word
  • Sunshine is the best disinfectant (used when she thought someone was hiding the truth)
  • “No, I did not have a dinosaur as a pet when I was growing up”! (In response to a question about what type of creatures roamed the earth when she was a kid – in the business world this means do your research on what someone’s background might be)
  • Say I’m sorry and mean it
  • A little kindness goes a long way
  • Eat everything on your plate – people all over the world are starving
  • Watch where you are going! (used when I was a new driver but very helpful in business)
  • You’ll be old yourself someday
  • If they jumped off of a bridge would you jump too?
  • Do at least one thing every day that scares you (take chances)
  • Stand up straight
  • Always write a thank – you note when you get a gift- no matter what
  • Don’t cross your eyes
  • Clean up your own mess
  • Turn off the TV and go outside (in the business world this means get away from the computer and interact with people)
  • You can do anything you want to in life, you just have to apply yourself
  • Do you want to get out of the car and walk the rest of the way? (used when there was too much complaining going on about having to sit in the back seat with my brother)
  • Be grateful
  • Play fair
