The ability to negotiate is an essential business skill. Whether negotiating with your boss or in the boardroom, having a knack for bargaining can help you attain your goals. Even if you are a natural, remember there’s always room for improvement. First, do your research. Coming into a situation with all relevant information and having anticipated the possible questions and concerns will help you more effectively negotiate what you want. It will also help you keep your cool and not get flustered if you are challenged on your proposal. Second, remember that by definition, negotiating implies a compromise. Knowing what you want and “sticking to your guns” does show confidence, but being unwilling to meet in the middle comes off as stubborn and makes it less likely that you will get what you came for.
